Tips for Sibling Caregivers

Mistakes of Adult Siblings

When siblings are dealing with an ill, aging or dying parent, there are many mistakes that are made. Siblings need to find a way to work together to do the best thing for the parent. The list below contains the 9 mistakes that are made by siblings as they try to navigate through these difficult times.

1. Many siblings feel that if another sibling is providing the care to the parent, they don’t have to be involved.

2. Siblings do not realize the caregiver also needs emotional support and appreciation.

3. Siblings often get angry when they are the caregiver and feel their other siblings should be providing care as well.

4. Never assume that siblings are the same people they were as kids.

5. Childhood roles have no meaning when it comes to caring for a parent.

6. Parents can often be the reason adult siblings are divided, yet siblings will blame each other. Parents will often tell different stories to their children, creating conflict.

7. When a parent is ill or dying, there are tough times ahead that all siblings will have to prepare for.

8. Never worry about the inheritance. What is left is left and there is no point arguing over monetary gains, especially while the parent is alive.

9. Not every person mourns the same way. Some siblings will get angry with another because they do not see them as mourning.
